I recently received the greatest compliment ever. It was told to me but....it was not my compliment. It is truly directed to the fabulous students and staff of the Floral Design Institute...

Early one morning I was gathering floral treasures at the Portland Flower Market. In casual conversation, I was told the market staff loves the FDI grads. "Why?", I asked. (Of course I love them but, why do you?) "Because they come in with knowledge." was the short answer. In explanation they expanded with story after story. I learned that often, market shoppers come in without the necessary basic floral knowledge. They expect the vendors to teach them. If there is time, the vendors are happy to. But, in the rush of the morning, there just is not enough time. They are there to sell the product and meet the needs of florists in the area. It is expected that wholesale shoppers be knowledgeable professionals. New market shoppers from the Floral Design Institute are prepared...
"FDI grads know flowers have
seasons.
They know flowers have
different care needs.
They know how to
choose fresh and how to substitute based upon availability.
FDI grads come to the market as professional,
educated and experienced florists."

From the stories I heard, the vendors see this over and over again - they love our grads. Thank you to teachers Kathy, Beth, Liz, Nancy and Chuck. It is because of your teaching skills that your students succeed. Your knowledge and experience help pave the way for a successful floral career.
FDI students, I am so proud of you. You work hard in the Learning Center and you work hard at home. And, of course, you play hard too!

If you have ever wondered why you should go to flower school.....now you know.
