Step 1:  PREPARATION & MECHANICS

Begin your basket by creating the birch branch handle.  I found it easiest to wire the branches directly to the basket frame before adding the moss.  Just wind the branches together and connect at the sides in at least three spots.  This will keep the handle from becoming floppy.  Then, you can line your basket with the sphagnum moss.  Tuck a bit extra at the handle connection points to conceal your mechanics.

Step 2: CREATING THE FORM

Place the presoaked wet foam (I used 2/3 brick)  in the liner and secure with floral tape.   Now, you can set the foam filled liner in the moss basket holding the moss into place.  Last, I reinforced the handle form with spirea branches.   Be sure to insert each spirea stem deeply into the foam so that it gets enough water.    As you can see in the above picture, the flowering branches add a softness to the birch branch base.
