Contemporary Spring Designs
using Armature Techniques

Sometimes the most elegant floral designs are also the simplest.  Take a look at the design on the right.  A single flowering almond branch and a single yellow Calla.  The branch is a armature that supports the Calla.

The use of armatures is one of my favorite contemporary design techniques.  I love the fact that an armature design "showcases" the blossoms in the design.  Armature designs generally use few flowers and little or no foliage.  The designs use water instead of foam. The flowers last longer and can easily be replaced.

Armatures can be very simple or very complex.  They can be made in advance with the flowers inserted at the last moment.
I love to make springtime armatures with almond, plum, cherry and quince branches.   After I make my armatures I set them in water and wait for their delicate blossoms to open.  Then, I complete the designs with flowers.

In the design below three plum branches have been trimmed then turned upside down.  I added four Amaryllis stems, three Philodendron leaves, bound the design with raffia and set it in a shallow round terracotta dish of water.
