“Only those who risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go.”

T.S. Eliot

As I watched Hitomi Gilliam on stage at our Creative Center Design Show, I was struck by one powerful element of her outstanding talent.  Hitomi has astonishing courage.  Yes, it takes courage to stand on a stage and design in front of an audience.  But, that’s not what I’m talking about.

I’m talking about “creative courage”.  The courage to forsake that which is known and comfortable, the courage to attempt the untried, the courage to stand in front of a hundred floral design professionals without a tested plan and using the materials at hand to create a design that you have never done before.  Wow!  That’s creative courage!  It is that creative courage that has made it possible for Hitomi to grow into the world respected floral designer that she is today.

“I am always doing that which I cannot do, in order that I may learn how to do it.”

Pablo Picasso

Last month I shared my “ten keys to finding creativity.”  After speaking with several of you, I understand that my story brought timely inspiration into numerous lives.  Many began following the ten steps and by the time they reached step number ten, they had realized that creativity requires courage - lots and lots of courage.
