image004.11.00.16.090 Elder-Photo-3x3.gif (69574 bytes) July 5 and 6 were very exciting days for the Senior Citizens of Seattle, Washington.  As part of a program titled ’Blooms over Seattle’, volunteer floral designers from the American Institute of Floral Designers (AIFD) created over 1,500 fresh-flower bouquets which were delivered to Senior Citizens living in Assisted Care facilities.

When David told me that he had “volunteered us” to be in charge of both the Blooms over Seattle and the Volunteers programs at the AIFD National Symposium, I could have killed him.  One program alone is a major undertaking, but to do both was sheer insanity.

Now that it’s done I have had a chance to rest and reflect on what was accomplished and the impact that we made on the lives of so many people.  I’m delighted that we undertook the challenge.

Over 150 volunteers gave up their lunch hours and evenings to make arrangements for the Blooms Program.   The flowers were used briefly on stage in a design program as centerpieces for a dinner or in the accreditation evaluation program.  They were then moved to the ’Blooms Room’ where the arrangements were disassembled, the flowers re-conditioned and then made into 6 inch ginger jar vase arrangements.  The completed arrangements were secured in individual waxed delivery boxes, and then packed three to a carton in large packing boxes which could be stacked in rental trucks for delivery.

Each bouquet had a custom designed ‘care tag’ attached crediting AIFD for the gift of flowers.  On the reverse side of the card was a quote from Luther Burbank; “Flowers always make people better, happier, and more helpful; they are sunshine, food and medicine to the soul”.
