The bounty of the garden is at its peak. Our recent days of sunshine and hot weather have produced an abundance of beautiful garden flowers and ready-to-pick produce. If you are one of the lucky ones, you need look no further that your own yard. For those of us without a personal garden, the local farmers market is filled with fabulous pickings: zinnias, montbretia, carrots and potatoes, fresh fragrant herbs, dahlias, scabiosa, peppers, kale and beans. My oh my, there is so much to choose from!

With such abundance, it is easy to get overwhelmed and lose your focus. Aimless wandering (although grand fun) can result in no purchases,or,far too many purchases. (Is this really a problem?) It’s best to arrive early, grab a cup of coffee and scout out the offerings ahead of time. Who has the best zinnias? Where are the perfect peppers? What fresh surprises are just around the corner? A quick walk through before the market opens will allow you to set a plan for purchasing the perfect bouquet fixings.

As soon as the market opens, you’re off! Gulp down that cup of coffee. You’re going to need both hands now. I always grab my produce first. The early market is often filled with gourmet cooks planning a feast. Can you believe it? They rush in, snatching the beautiful pepper I need for designing. (Chopping and eating a thing of beauty – how could they?!?!?) Once I have secured my veggies, I move on to the flowers. A bouquet here, a few loose stems there and, another bouquet and a few more stems and….Oops! My arms are full. Did I mention you may need a “carrier” to assist with your flower shopping? That’s what husbands are for.

Whew! That’s done. Now a final purchase of the perfect, freshly-baked, gooey pastry – a special reward for the successful shopping adventure – and off to home we go. I know that you will enjoy the following pages where I share some of my favorite design ideas for mixing
The Garden's Bounty of flowers and vegetables. Enjoy!

For those of you close to Portland or Seattle, we have a hands-on
