Wedding Floral Specialist Online

This is an Open Enrollment Distance Learning Program designed for the person who is unable to travel to one of our Learning Centers. Dedicate yourself to one of the fastest growing segments of the floral industry and become an FDI Certified Wedding Floral Specialist. A prerequisite of Basic Floral Design or 500 hours of on-the-job experience as a floral designer is required.

Offering the same training as our Learning Center program, the professional Wedding Floral Specialist certificate course is designed to provide focused training in wedding and event floral design. The training will explore the various histories and traditions of the wedding ceremony and the romantic language of flowers. You will learn to design flowers for all types of ceremonies from traditional to contemporary and from simple to elaborate. You will learn to design bridal bouquets in many forms and styles, body flowers, large bouquets, decorations for the ceremony and the reception, garlands, candelabras, fabulous party décor and so much more. The final days of the program will be filled with fun, excitement, a bit of drama and a taste of the real world. To graduate from this program you will complete a full wedding and present it for instructor critique. Yes, you will do a full wedding from start to finish: planning, story board, pricing, ordering, receiving, preparing, designing and displaying. Wow! What a grand opportunity to fulfill your dreams of wedding certification.

How it all works – We make it fun and easy! Our distance learning programs provide learning material via instructional DVDs, text book and study guides, internet reference, online and phone communication plus finished design project photo evaluations. Included with the program are all floral design tools, floral supplies and design materials (with the exception of fresh flowers) that you need to complete the program. With our direction and guidance you will purchase fresh flowers needed for the completion of your assignments and exercises. You will view each module DVD, taking notes in your study guide and stopping when instructed to work on your hands-on floral design project. After completing your floral design projects, you will photograph them for your portfolio and submit the photographs to us for critique.

Working at your own pace, in the comfort of your own home and following the step-by-step training in our proven distance learning program, you will learn everything you need to prepare yourself for Floral Design Institute Wedding Certification.

Most importantly, the FDI teaching staff is always available by phone or e-mail to answer your questions. You may be a thousand miles away, but you are never alone. We will guide you and assist you as you work through each lesson.

Our Advanced Wedding Floral Design Program is presented in 6 gemstone collections. Each of these includes one or more learning modules filled with design demonstrations, wedding history, traditions, techniques and creative inspiration.

Each module is packed full with fabulous information you will utilize throughout your career as a professional wedding florist. Reviewing the basic and quickly expanding into the advanced, this comprehensive program covers everything you need to prepare you for your Floral Design Institute Certification.

Each gemstone contains a DVD clearly noted with chapters detailing each module, a reading assignment, and design projects. A shopping list for fresh materials and all the necessary supplies will be shipped with each collection. Included with your first fresh flower shopping list will be “Helpful Hints for Purchasing and Choosing Flowers”.

It will include information on choosing a supplier, what to look for in quality, and what to expect in pricing. The shopping lists have been put together using flowers that should be readily available at a moderate price. We will note the list if there are materials that can be re-used for another project. Thus, saving you money. At times, there will be substitutions or optional items included on the list as well. At the end of each gemstone collection, a special insert is included depicting a wedding vignette representing the gemstone. This is a separate piece of the program meant to expand your knowledge base of the coordinated wedding presentation.

All necessary tools, non-perishable design materials and floral supplies are provided and will be shipped to you. With our direction and advice, you will purchase the fresh flowers needed for the completion of your assignments and exercises. Most importantly, the FDI teaching staff is always available by phone or e-mail to answer your questions. You may be a thousand miles away, but you are never alone. We will guide you and assist you as you work through each lesson.

As you progress through your lessons, you will learn new skills and develop the proficiency necessary to apply these skills. You will be amazed at how quickly you will master the advanced skills of floral design. Our proven teaching methods will have you ready to step into the bridal flower world upon completion of the program.

You will learn and understand the history and traditions of today's wedding ceremony, bridal bouquet forms and styles, body flowers for the traditional or contemporary bridal party, wedding sales, pricing and marketing, etiquette, the romantic language of flowers, decorations for the ceremony – large bouquets, garlands, candelabras, and structures, fabulous party décor, and oh, so much more.

With each gemstone collection, you will receive one or more instruction modules and a training DVD filled with lectures and detailed demonstrations of your hands-on floral design projects. Each of these Instruction Modules includes a printed study guide, which will outline the lessons and project assignments in the module. You will receive all of the non-perishable design materials and floral supplies necessary to complete your assignments, and floral design projects. You will also receive a shopping list of the fresh flowers and foliages that you will need to purchase from local sources. You will review your study guide, complete the reading assignments, and purchase the fresh flowers necessary for your floral design projects.

You will view the appropriate DVD chapter, taking notes in your study guide, stopping the DVD when instructed, to work on your hands-on floral design project. After completing your floral design projects, you will photograph them. You will complete an open book quiz for the instruction module, then send both the photographs and the completed instruction module study quiz to us.

You will have the comfort of knowing that should you have a problem or a question you can always call us toll-free for instructor support.

There are two ways that you can send your photographs and study quizzes to us. You may mail them via the US Postal Service or you may e-mail them. If you chose e-mail, we will ship your study quiz to you with your instruction module. You then simply type your answers in an e-mail message (no need to type the question). Then, add the attachment of your .JPEG images. We will review and critique your floral designs, then send you a written review and evaluation.

Working at your own pace and in the comfort of your own home you will complete all 14 Instruction Modules included in your gemstone collections. There are two final steps to obtain your Floral Design Institute Certified Wedding Specialist designation.

The first step is an open book written exam covering the same material found in your study quizzes. You will then complete your final project, a complete wedding vignette. This is an extensive, hands-on practical project, which you will complete, photograph as directed and return to us for grading.

If you are like me, you find exams "scary". Don't worry, by the time you have completed the study quizzes and floral design projects in all 14 Instruction Modules, each with our review, critique, and suggestions, you will be fully prepared for the final exams and will complete them with ease. The final exams are scored on a scale of 100. You must score an average of 70 or above to pass. You will receive a complete written review and critique of your final exam floral designs.

After you have successfully passed your final exams we will immediately mail to you your Floral Design Institute Graduation Certificate of Achievement and you will be able to use the title, FDI Certified Wedding Specialist.

You will now possess not only a Graduation Certificate from the most respected Floral Design School in the world, you will also own a complete photographic portfolio of your own floral design work, a professional floral designer's tool kit, plus the knowledge, the training, the skills, and the practical experience that will allow you to expand your career as a wedding floral designer.

As a Graduate of Floral Design Institute you will have access to our "job database", a listing of employers seeking graduates for floral design positions throughout the United States. You will also have our continuing support and assistance as you pursue your career. Call us. We are here to help.

What is the difference between Advanced Floral Design, Classroom Study and Advanced Wedding Floral Design, Distance Learning?

Our advanced classroom program includes three days of wedding instruction. This program is the equivalence of 15 days of classroom instruction. We are able to bring you far more information and educational opportunities in this DVD format than we are able to within the classroom environment. More effort and initiative is required of the Distance Learning student to focus on their studies. In the classroom, we buy all of the fresh flowers and organize your classroom day for you. When you study at home, you have to obtain your fresh flowers, plus plan and organize your study time. If you are a motivated individual, and you finish all Instruction Modules fully and completely, then the resulting quality of training is nearly the same. You just cover more material in a convenient "at home" environment.

I want to start my own floral business and work from my home. Will the Advanced Floral Design Distance Learning Career Program prepare me for that?

Yes, many Floral Design Institute students have begun their own home, or studio based businesses upon graduation from our Basic and Advanced Floral Design programs. The opportunities for home and studio based, wedding floral design businesses continues to grow. This advanced program offers excellent advanced level instruction.

What supplies are included with the course?

Our distance learning program provides all of the books, learning materials, floral design tools, floral supplies and design materials (with the exception of fresh flowers) that you will need to complete this program. Click Here for a link to a complete listing of the tools, books, and supplies included in this program.

What tools are included in the Tool Kit?

Click Here for a link to the listing of all tools and supplies included in the Tool Kit.

How much are the Fresh Flowers that I need for my design projects going to cost?

The cost of the fresh flowers will average from $25.00 – 50.00 per project. We will offer guidance on where you can obtain flowers for the best prices; you can even use flowers and foliages from your garden. Our project lessons are organized so that you can reuse fresh flowers for the greatest economy.

Can I use different Fresh Flowers than those suggested for my design projects?

Yes, you may substitute flowers in most projects. Yet, other projects require specific flowers (usually the more common bridal flowers). We will offer a listing of substitutes to help you as you choose your flowers for each project.

What if I cannot find the flowers that I need for my design projects?

Flowers have such widespread distribution today, that you will be able to find the flowers needed for your projects. Even if you live in the middle of nowhere, there are flowers-by-mail sources that we can recommend.

Are there any time limits for completing my projects?

I won't be able to watch over your shoulder as you complete you projects. However, developing good speed in design is critical to profitability. We will offer suggested time benchmarks that you will aim for in designing your projects.

Can I enroll at any time for the Distance Learning Advanced Wedding Floral Design Program?

Yes, you can enroll at any time, and proceed at you own pace.

How long does it take to complete the program?

For most individuals it will take six to nine months to complete the program. But, the program can be completed more quickly.

How long do I have to wait after the completion of an instruction module for the next module to arrive?

We have designed a shipping program that nearly eliminates any wait time. After the projects, quizzes and evaluation of the Emerald shipment (module 1) are complete, the Ruby Collection, modules 2, 3 and 4 are shipped. After the projects, quizzes and evaluation of module 3 are complete, the Sapphire Collection, modules 5, 6, 7, and 8 are shipped. This allows you to be working on module 4 while the Sapphire Collection is in route. This planned shipping continues throughout the program.

The Emerald Collection - Module 1 is shipped by itself.
The Ruby Collection - Modules 2, 3 and 4 are shipped together upon completion of module 1.
The Sapphire Collection – Modules 5, 6, 7, and 8 are shipped together upon completion of module 3
The Topaz Collection - Modules 9 and 10 are shipped together on completion of module 7
The Amethyst Collection - Modules 11, and 12 are shipped together upon completion of module 9.
The Diamond Collection Modules 13 and 14 are shipped upon completion of module 11.

I already own some of the listed items in the tool kit. May I eliminate these items and deduct the cost from my enrollment?

There will be items you have collected over the years that may be similar or even the same as the items included with this program. Unfortunately, we are not able to separate individual items from the program. As a professional florist, I am sure you will be able to use the additional items. Besides, what fun it is to have “new”!

Thank You FDI for the incredible training, which inspired my design confidence! I just landed a great design job! Kim

I have thoroughly enjoyed the videos and the kind of communication your school is known for. I feel that my status as a student in your distance learning means that I am cared for by the school. This is not an easy thing to accomplish via distance learning. You all do a fabulous job making this an intimate and a positive experience for the distance learner. Bottom line, I really am enjoying your school. You all are doing a fabulous job serving those of us in the distance learning community. Bravo! Gwen

I just want to take a moment after finishing my module 7 (almost half of the course!!) to let you know how I'm feeling about this great distance learning experience. I am very happy with the course and although it is challenging, and a bit stressful, what I'm learning and experiencing is really, really worth it all. I have been learning a lot and feel that these lessons are exactly what I was looking for. Ana

Finding FDI was the best thing that could have happened to me! After being home with my kids for 10 years, floral design had been a love and a hobby of mine for many years. As my kids all went off to school I had to opportunity to figure out what I really wanted to do career wise. To be able to pursue my education in floral design from my home was a dream-come-true. And to be able to get such a great education and continued support was more than I could have hoped for. Thank you! Kimberly
