Basic Floral Design Online

I was recently reminded of the importance of Basic Floral Design Training in a very sweet note that I received from a graduate of several years ago who today owns a beautiful and successful flower shop. This graduate had recently attended an advanced seminar featuring several master floral designers. Her note began "Thank you so much for the valuable training that I received in your Basic Floral Design Program. I could not believe how well your program prepared me for this seminar. The master designers were wonderful and I learned so much, but without your basic training, the seminar would have been an experience in frustration and I would have learned very little".

    Hi!

I would like to obtain the certificate of Certified Floral Designer (CFD), could you help me with that? If so , what is the procedure? I can only do distance learning because I am in US right now.

    Thank you!
    Simin

  13. david:

    Mar 11, 2019 at 09:32 AM

Hello Simin, Yes we can help you obtain your “CFD” certification. You would have to complete our Online Basic Floral Design Program and our Online Advanced Floral Design Program. Upon graduation you would be awarded our Certified Floral Designer (FDI) Certification. We would then submit your name to the American Institute of Floral Designers (AIFD) as qualified to test for the AIFD “CFD” Certification. This is an online, open-book test. Upon successful completion of this test (our graduates have a 100% pass rate history} you would be awarded the AIFD CFD Certification. David

I would like to know if your basic floral online class will include the newest trend of floral arrangement like creating floral arches, table garland, flower crowns. What is required to get the CFD and how long will it take and is the online class have a deadline to complete the course.

  27. david:

    May 24, 2019 at 07:19 PM

    Hi Purple!
We just updated our online and in-person courses. The garland and crowns are included in the Basic Floral Design course. Statement pieces and structures - think arbors, arches, chandeliers, and floating centerpieces are in the September Creative Retreat.

The CFD requires successful completion of Basic and Advanced Floral Design to receive your FDI Certified Floral Designer status and then, an online test with the American Institute of Floral Designers to receive your CFD through them.

The online course has 1 year for completion with full teacher support. You have lifetime access to the materials after that.

  50. Elizabeth C Daney:

    Apr 21, 2020 at 09:50 AM

If I were to complete the basic virtual program, how much would I be spending on my own supplies/flowers to complete the program successfully? Also, do I need to complete the basic and the advanced to become certified or is only basic required? Thank you.

  51. david:

    Apr 21, 2020 at 02:39 PM

Hi Elizabeth, Excellent questions! While we encourage students to explore and practice all design projects presented in this program, there are only 11 projects required for submission and evaluation. Each of these projects will cost between $25 and $75, with an average cost of $35 per project. These costs can vary depending on where you are located. We will offer guidance on where you can obtain flowers and supplies for the best prices, you can even use flowers and foliages from your garden. Our project lessons are organized so that you can reuse fresh flowers for the greatest economy.

To become a Floral Design Institute Certified Floral Designer you must complete both the Basic and Advanced programs. Feel free to call or write is you have additional questions. We are here to help you, David

Hi, guys, I'm really interested in this course and wondered if you could give me a little more information about how much detail you cover regarding the pros and cons of refrigerating flowers, the optimum humidity, the risks of the flowers going into shock if they are moved from a cool room to warm hospital environment, etc. I haven't been getting much longevity out of my home arrangements and realise I have a big knowledge gap in this area.

Thank you so much for your time,

    Jul 13, 2020 at 09:08 AM

I am a woman aged 48 years. I currently own a flower nursery. I grow plants from cuttings and seed both perennial and annual flowers. I am very much interested in cut flowers (fresh flowers) arrangements. I get a lot of customers asking for fresh flowers and I have out sourced this service, however, I have realized that I am loosing a lot of money unless I train as a florist. I live in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe in Africa. Can I enroll with your Institute for basic floral design.

  60. david:

    Jul 15, 2020 at 08:29 AM

Oh, yes! We welcome students from all over the world. You, as a flower grower, would be right on-trend with adding design to your client offerings. The new, updated course is 100% digital which makes it easy to study from home. It is also fully teacher supported to help you get the fullest benefit from your studies. The business of floral is included in the course. This truly will help you reach profitability with your business.

  61. david:

    Jul 15, 2020 at 08:32 AM

    Hi Rachel,

Materials vary greatly depending on your location. The course is set up so you can adjust to seasonal and local flowers to save money. We also encourage repurposing your flowers for maximum benefit. A guesstimate for budgeting would be $25-$50 per project. Many students are also foraging materials from gardens, public spaces, and grocery stores.

  62. Judi:

    Jul 16, 2020 at 10:07 PM

Approx. how long does it take a student on average to complete the basic course?

  63. david:

    Jul 17, 2020 at 10:37 AM

Hi Judi, Most students complete the course in 3-4 months. It is self paced and truly depends upon the time you can devote to studies. It can be done faster. It is the same curriculum as our 3-week classroom program. It can also be done slower as we all know, life is complicated these days. We give you one full year of teacher support to complete your program. Of course, you have lifetime access to the lessons.

    Good afternoon,

I will like to know when are the in person classes available again (if there is a date or possible date) and what is the duration of this Basic Floral Design Program...the reason I ask is because I really prefer an in person teaching, during these time I have been doing some online workshops with some of my favorite Floral designers and I find the ordering and delivering a little stressful and nothing compares to in face -to -face classes. Also what is the duration of the whole program: basic, intermediate, advance, etc ( the whole program) and price ? because I live in Miami, Florida and if I decide to go there I will like to finish all levels and get the certifications.

    Warmly,

    Mariela

    Hello Mariela,
We plan to resume in person classes in September. The first session is sold out. We do have space in the October session. To complete your studies and obtain your Certified Floral Designer designation you would need to be in Portland Oregon four weeks. The Basic course begins on October 19 and graduates on November 6th. You would continue on with the advanced course beginning November 9 and graduate as a Certified Floral Designer on November 13. Would I be able to enroll in your on-line Advanced Course since I'm already certified in the basics of floral design? This seems to be an ideal time to "sharpen" my hands-on floral design techniques since the wedding industry is STILL in such a flux due to COVID and my workshop was recently moved to my home. Hello David and Leanne. I am considering taking the online course that you advertise. I am mostly concerned that I will not be able to deal with technicalities of sending photo as evidence, and such like. I'm 70 so no spring chicken when it comes to being tech-savvy. I own a Mac and don't do windows, or teams or such like. I can do Zoom. I'm wondering about whether it would be practicable to be able to do the course, manage the projects and get them to you for evidence. I'm sure otherwise, I would really enjoy it. What are your thoughts on this please?

  81. david:
