Love Letters

Laura

Hello flower lovers.

I am writing this “brag” because I wanted to tell whoever I could about my incredible experience at the Floral Design Institute.

Let me tell you a little of my story.  In June I retired after nearly 25 years of teaching.  I knew that I wanted to “do flowers” for a long time.  I have done flowers for our church for a long time and wanted to “expand” my horizons.  I looked into several programs and decided on FDI.  The next decision was do I do it at the Learning Center in Portland or do it online via distance learning.  After calculating everything my husband and I decided to head to Portland with our pull behind trailer and I would do the Basic class offered in September.  I attended the Basic class.  During the basic class I realized that the advanced class would be the week following the basic class so stayed and completed the Advanced class in September of 2017 as well.

I cannot say enough wonderful things about the school, teachers, and help provided after the classes but I will make an attempt to say those things now.  The school.  From the beginning the school was very helpful not only in what was related to school but things like information in regards to RV parks etc.

The teachers.  Our main teacher for both the Basic and Advanced was Michelle.  I feel that being a retired teacher I have a pretty good grasp on what good / great teaching looks like and Michelle is a great teacher.  She is an encourager, one who teaches with care and love.  She lets you know how to improve without putting you down.  She gives multiple opportunities for success.  I can’t thank her enough.  Leanne was also one of our instructors periodically and she shared her expertise and ways of doing things. We got her perspective as well.  It was really good to have two insights into the “creative” part of floral design.  I can’t leave out David who provided what I would call the “practical” nuts and bolts of working in the floral industry.  Also very knowledgeable and a very important part of the training.

Since the training has concluded…. I LOVE the live streams on Wednesdays and also I have ordered multiple videos from the library to further and broaden what I learned at the learning center in Portland.  The resources available to purchase are wonderful as well.  My husband gave me a gift certificate from FDI for Christmas and right after school I put together my tool box with many items ordered from the school.

In summary I cannot say enough wonderful things about FDI, Leanne, Michelle, David and the support staff.  I wish Portland was closer so I could attend some of the shorter trainings and weekends.

Leanne keep up the good work! It’s awesome!!!!

What does one say to someone and a team of someones who have literally helped one transform one's life? Thank you to all of you amazing people who taught and gave and loved with no judgement, no scorn and with complete unfiltered joy and passion. I am forever grateful for the experience. Our lives are better for it. With Love, Thank You!

Leanne,  Your enthusiasm for my projects and the gift of flexibility and encouragement to be creative has enabled me to fulfill my lifetime dream to continue on the heritage of the special gifts that were handed down to me by both sides of my grandparents. I am overwhelmed with gratitude to you and your team.

Today was the first day in the flower shop! I go back Monday and Tuesday too! The owner let me jump right in and start designing. The owner stated that my designs were beautiful, look nice and full and held well during delivery due to my weaving technique. It was a grand day and I look forward to doing it again on Monday and Tuesday.

Last year, after doing a lot of research on different schools, I enrolled for the Basic Floral Design online classes with FDI, and I must say it is the smartest thing I have ever done for myself. They are so truly interested, they are easy to get a hold of, so positive, so inspiring - and as AIFD they have incredible knowledge and a respect for the craft that shines trough in everything they do. After one year of Basic Floral Design I landed an internship and because of them I am never in doubt that I know what I am doing, simply because I know I am trained by the best.  If you are going to choose a school, this is the best one you can find.
