Spring Flower Happiness

Welcome to the Flower School .com video library. I'm Leanne Kesler, director of the Floral Design Institute. Today, I'm here to share with you a fun and simple design featuring fabulous spring bulb flowers. 

The base of the design, one of my favorite vessels from my collection, it's actually two parts. It has a ceramic insert with a ceramic basket. I lined it with floral netting taped into place with waterproof tape. I just add fresh water already mixed with flower food, and I'm ready to design. 

To begin, a little bit of eucalyptus. This will give me a nice base to support the flowers, little bit of a nest. Just breaking it down, then sliding it down into the netting, letting it drape over the edge of the container. Softening, breaking the line, starting the design before I even tuck in any flowers. 

Once I have a nice little bed to support the blooms, I can go back with the largest blooms first, the hyacinths. So fragrant, super wonderful. Cutting them down then nestling them down into the mesh, and it holds them right into place. Radiating from the central binding point so it balances from side to side, then tucking in a few tulips, also larger blooms. Remembering that they will continue to grow, so tucking them where they have room to grow, trailing outward, breaking the line of the container. 

Once you have your larger blooms in place and the form established, you can go back with more fun blooms. Maybe the anemone, the bud just starting to open, setting it down into the netting. Larger blooms carrying your eye out to the front. Bringing around to the back, filling it from all sides. Then tucking in paperwhites. They're little and delicate, oh so fragrant, as well. Adding that bright white in there. Bringing some towards the top, then down to the sides, front and back, radiating from the central binding point, filling it in. Adding that beauty of springtime. 

Once the flowers are all in place, you can go back and enhance with a bit more of the eucalyptus, helping to break the line of the container. Bringing some up towards the center, filling in with the blooms. That soft blue-gray just enhances the vibrant hues of spring blossoms. Then for fun, adding a little bit of a dynamic line. Got some beautiful jasmine vine. Just cutting it down, placing it in, and then letting it wind over the top. A branch or two, turning it. As you add, the design looks fabulous from every single direction. 

There's nothing better than springtime blooms to chase away the winter blues. The recipe for this design, 10 tulips, 5 hyacinths, 5 anemone, 10 paperwhites, and then jasmine vine and eucalyptus.
