Botanical facts: The stems and leaves contain a characteristic white, milky latex, which is the source of the common name “milkweed.”
Design notes: Asclepias is a wonderful textural flower in floral design. Its rounded clusters of small, star-shaped blooms create a soft mass while still allowing plenty of visual movement and negative space. Because the flower heads are clustered on relatively strong stems, Asclepias can also provide gentle line and rhythm within a composition.
Purchasing hints: Select turgid stems with undamaged leaves and blossom clusters that are almost fully open.
Conditioning: Remove all foliage that will be below the water line. Cut stem ends with as sharp knife. Hydrate in water mixed with a commercial floral food for two hours before storage or usage.
Additional notes: The milky sap can be irritating and may interfere with water uptake, so clean handling and proper conditioning are important before designing.
