Bluebells

Botanical names: Hyacinthoides hispanica

Availability: January through May

Vase life: 5 to 7 days

Storage temperatures: 36 - 38 degrees Fahrenheit

Description: Delicate bell-shaped nodding blooms which hang in clusters on one side of a slender arching stem.

Color: Blue-Violet is most common, also Pale Blue, Lavender, White and Pink.

Botanical facts: Native to Spain and Portugal. Vigorous spreader; can become invasive

Design notes: The tall, arching stems naturally create soft, graceful movement, making them ideal for line or transition in linear or garden-style designs. The small, nodding blooms add fine texture and a romantic, woodland feel.

Purchasing hints: Purchase erect turgid spikes with blossoms well attached to the spike. Bluebells are very delicate and damage easily. Avoid stems that are shedding blossoms.

Conditioning: Remove all foliage that will be below the waterline. Cut stem ends with a sharp knife. Hydrate in a solution of water and commercial floral food for two hours before storage or usage.

Additional notes: All parts of the Bluebell plant are toxic.
