Description: Uluhe are the unopened fronds (fiddlehead) of a giant tropical fern. The unopened fronds are 15 to 18 inches long with a spiral of frond (curl) at the tip.

Botanical facts: in Hawaii, Uluhe has been used traditionally for medicinal purposes and in weaving and other crafts.

Design notes: The distinctive and exotic appearance of the Uule fern curls ads interest and texture to a floral design. Commonly used with other tropical flowers to enhance a vertical line in a design.

Purchasing hints: Select fronds that are turgid and appear fresh. Avoid fronds that are bent or broken.

Conditioning: Cut two inches off of the stem ends with a sharp knife. Hydrate in water only for two hours before storage or usage. Store in water only.

Additional notes: Uluhe flourishes in tropical rainforests. It is valuable in its ability to grow so thick in rainforests that invasive species cannot grow.
